![]() To me it's kind of supposed to be phasing between background and deep listening music. What do you guys think? Are The Disintegration Loops a masterpiece, overrated, or somewhere in the middle? I was born before the attacks, but my first memory wouldn't come until a few months later. I do have to wonder if I don't appreciate these albums because I have no memory of the September 11 attacks. I'm a punk rock guy, so going from a genre where each song is loud, abrasive, and short to hour long loops is pretty jarring. The loops stop being special after 10 or so minutes, and at that point I am left wondering what else I'm missing.Īdmittedly, this isn't the music I normally listen to. Like I said, they're certainly pretty, especially "dlp 3" on the second album, but they're way too long. I try to be open when it comes to any form of music, but the Disintegration Loops are a bit boring. These albums received critical acclaim, and some publications like Pitchfork called the Disintegration Loops one of the best albums of the 2000s. The album covers are four different stills from a video he recorded of the New York skyline after the attack, and each album was dedicated to the victims of the attacks. Overwrought writing aside, the September 11 attacks definitely had an strong emotional impact on Basinski. He then watched from his Brooklyn apartment as two planes struck the Twin Towers. Basinski recorded these albums in Brooklyn in 2001, and finished them early on a Tuesday morning. What makes this album even more special is the backstory. I feel like the best way to experience this album is to sit on top of your home, staring off into the sunset, and contemplate every life choice you've ever made (like a cliche scene from a teen movie). Admittedly, the music is very pretty, and sounds a bit like post-rock. It's often a short sound looped over and over again for sometimes up to an hour. The music on these albums (if you can even call it music) is VERY minimal. He further treated the sounds with a spatializing reverb effect." He allowed the loops to play for extended periods as they deteriorated further, with increasing gaps and cracks in the music. Decades later, while transferring the recordings from magnetic tape to a more reliable digital format, Basinski found that the tape had deteriorated sufficiently that as it passed the tape head, the ferrite detached from the plastic backing and fell off. According to Wikipedia: "Basinski recorded from found sound sources, shortwave radio, and delay systems, influenced by musicians such as Steve Reich and Brian Eno. Here is a link to the first album on Spotify. ![]() Each album was released on a different date from 2002 to 2003. The Disintegration Loops is a series of four albums by composer William Basinski (ignore the typo in the title, I can't change reddit post titles).
